Research Engineer - Multi Physics Analysis

Hydrogen

  • Location Icon England, Bristol
  • Work Type Icon Contract or Temp

Job Description

The project is to design and develop systems engineering activities in support of hydrogen powered aircraft systems, either with Fuel Cells or H2 combustion.

As a Multiphysics Analysis Engineer, you will play a crucial role in analysing and simulating complex systems or phenomena involving multiple physical domains.

Your responsibilities will include developing computational models, conducting simulations, and analyzing results to gain insights into the behavior of systems across various disciplines such as structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, electromagnetics, and acoustics.

This position requires expertise in numerical methods, simulation software, and a deep understanding of physics principles across multiple domains including material properties in cryogenic environment, fluid dynamic behavior of mixed phase gas and liquid to gas transitions in heat exchangers.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Develop computational models to simulate multi-physics phenomena, considering interactions between different physical domains such as structural mechanics, fluid flow and heat transfer, electromagnetics, and acoustics.
  • Set up simulation scenarios, define boundary conditions, material properties, and solver settings to accurately represent real-world conditions.
  • Execute multi-physics simulations using numerical methods such as finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite volume method (FVM), or boundary element method (BEM).
  • Analyze and interpret simulation results to understand the interactions and coupling effects between different physical phenomena.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists from different disciplines, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, and aerospace engineering, to address multi-physics challenges in interdisciplinary projects.
  • Develop and implement new methodologies, techniques, or algorithms to improve the accuracy, efficiency, or scope of multi-physics analysis capabilities.
Essential Skills
  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field with a focus on multi-physics analysis. Bachelor's degree with relevant experience may be considered.
  • Proficiency in multi-physics simulation software such as COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS Multiphysics, Abaqus, or Amesim.
  • Strong understanding of numerical methods, mathematical modelling, and physics principles across multiple domains (e.g., structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, electromagnetics).
  • Experience in setting up and solving complex multi-physics simulation problems involving coupled phenomena and dynamic interactions.
  • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python) and scripting for automation of simulation tasks and post-processing of results.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data, identify trends, and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical concepts to a diverse audience.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Non Aerospace backgrounds welcome, ie Petro Chemical or Physics background.
Advantageous Skills:
  • Cryogenic / Hydrogen Gas modelling
  • Fuel Cells and liquid gas modelling
